Every year I make a winter coat or jacket. I enjoy working on it between projects. I started this coat last fall. I finished it a while ago but didn’t get around to taking pictures until today. Of course I chose a day with a high of 80 degrees.
I’ve had this quilted polyester from Fabric Mart in my stash for a few years. I wanted a very simple coat to wear to work in the winter. I chose this pattern because I like the seaming details and the asymmetrical front closing. The view I chose has snaps instead of buttons/buttonholes. The pattern also has a back pleat but I chose to omit it because my fabric would never have held a pleat.
I lengthened the sleeves by 1″. I usually have to do this with coats of jackets. I also added a back stay and sleeve heads. Shoulder pads are optional with this pattern. I opted to go with 3/8″ shoulder pads. When making coats or jackets I always refer to “Jackets For Real People”. It is a Palmer/Pletsch Publication. The coat is fully lined.
I have one big dislike about this pattern: One-piece sleeves. Why do pattern companies do this? Better yet, why aren’t I more confident in altering the sleeve to be a two-piece sleeve? I found a few tutorials on-line on how to make a two-piece sleeve with a one-piece sleeve but I chickened out at the last minute and sewed the sleeve as is. I pledge to challenge myself to create a two-piece sleeve when faced with the opportunity in the future.
My sister knitted a scarf to go with my coat.I figured I was already wearing a coat, boots, tights and a turtleneck in 80 degree weather, I might as well go all the way and add a scarf and gloves.
This looks amazing! Thanks so much for the review, I’ve been looking for an interesting princess-seamed coat pattern and this one has just enough unusual details that it’s up at the top of the list. However, your fabric choice really pushes it over the top.
Thank you!
What a beautiful coat! and a great review, too!
Thank you Margy!
Wow, the coat is fab and you are such a trooper getting dressed up as if for winter in 80 degrees of heat. The fabric actually looks like a soft leather in the photos.
Thank you Utta!
Very chic! I love the asymmetrical front and the seaming on the back. Great job!

Thank you Manju!
This is great! I’ve seen that type of fabric at various places and have always liked it but wondered what I’d do with it. You picked the perfect project.
Thank you Amanda. The fabric was nice to work with.
You look “hot” in your new coat — and not in a weather way! Smashing!
Thank you Cissie!
Winter togs on our first summery day, but you manage to look cool as a cucumber; a very stylish one! Gorgeous coat.
Thank you Nancy!
