Burda Style 08-2011-128 + New Look 6209 = New Red Suit

I’ve been wanting to sew myself a suit and I got inspired when I found this red fabric in my stash. I think it was from Fabric Mart. It feels like a heavy weight double knit but is a woven.

I immediately knew what dress pattern I wanted to make. I’ve had New Look 6209 in my pattern stash for a while. I like the simple lines of this pattern.

I decided to fully line the dress though the pattern directs you to only line the yoke.

I had a vision for the jacket and while perusing my Burda Style magazines I came across exactly what I had pictured: Burda Style 08-2011-128. I wanted a short swing jacket with a deep pleat in the back. Even the sleeve length was what I was looking for.

The jacket pattern has welt pockets on the front which I chose to omit. The pattern did not call for shoulder pads but I felt like I needed a little something to shape she shoulders. I did not have any shoulder pads on-hand and wanted to keep sewing so I made my own 1/4″ shoulder pads using quilt batting. There are a bunch of tutorials on-line on how to make your own shoulder pads.

The jacket is fully lined. I could not find red lining that matched well so I went with a leopard print silky polyester print. Can you tell I like my suit? 🙂

  1. I’m just now seeing this beautiful suit, I agree with the comments saying it is a classic! It reminds me of the style of former US First Lady, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, whom, as you know, dressed so beautifully and always was so chic. Great choice on the color and style and putting it together.

  2. Red is definitely your color! Your new suit looks wonderful on you. It is chilly here this morning and I need to wear red to church (Pentecost). This would be perfect! Can you email it to me???
