I’ve had Vogue 1407 in my pattern stash for over a year. I loved the style of the dress but was not inspired by any fabrics I was coming across. While on a quick trip to Quebec last February I stopped by my favorite fabric store, Tissus Mode De L’Orme in Granby. I was walking through the store when this white and black double-knit jumped out at me. Fabrics tend to do that when I least expect it. I knew right away this was going to be for Vogue 1407. I had some black double-knit in my stash that would pair with it perfectly.
I like the way the solid back appears to wrap around the front because of the side inset pieces. The pattern calls for an exposed zipper in the back, which I omitted. This was fine as my fabric has good four-way stretch. Because I omitted the zipper I was able to sew the neck binding in one piece instead of two as called for in the pattern. I taped both pattern pieces together overlapping by 1 3/8″. This took care of the 5/8″seams as well as the 1.5″ that I removed from the binding in order to avoid any gaping.
Lining up the dots went well because the pattern clearly indicates the center front on all three front pieces. The pattern also calls for lining the dress. I used a lightweight tricot for the lining.
Omitting the zipper and sewing the binding as one piece were the only changes I made to this dress. The sizing and length were great right out of the envelope. I know I’ll get a lot of wear out of this dress once the weather warms up here on the Central Coast of California.
Magnifique! J’adore!

Thank you Sarah!
Beautiful dress, and looks great on you! Using center front markings to help pattern placement – brilliant! And just the kind of thing that wouldn’t occur to me.
Thank you Nancy!
How beautiful! I love the fabric you chose and the perfect lining up along the center front.
Thank you Amanda!
Lucy, you surely have the best wardrobe in all of California. This new addition is terrific — and your shoes are perfect with it!
Thank you Cissie!
Absolutely stunning dress. The spotty fabric would have been too much if used for the entire dress but combined with the black has provided the perfect balance and highlighted the design lines of the style. Beautifully sewn and fitted too.
Thank you Jean!
What a fab match of fabric and pattern, that really works well.
Thank you Su!
