Butterick 5950 – Knit Dress

I like to make a new dress for Thanksgiving. It has to be a simple sewing project because it is a busy time of the year. I bought this textured double knit from Tissus Mode De l’Orme in Granby, QC last summer. It was a remnant so I was limited in what I could sew with it. I enjoy the challenge of trying to find a pattern for a specific length of fabric.

While going through my patterns I came across Butterick 5950 which is now out of print. I purchased the pattern to make view A but never got around to it. My remnant was big enough to make view C.

I omitted the zipper. This dress goes easily on and off over my head. I lengthened the bodice by 1″. I normally have to do this. I also lengthened the skirt by 1″.

This dress was not part of my sewing plans. I’ve been so focused on sewing for our vacation next year that I overlooked my immediate “needs”.

My fashion photographer and I ran outside for a quick photo shoot during a break in the food prep. I hope that those celebrating had a Happy Thanksgiving.

  1. What a lovely dress, my goodness! ๐Ÿ™‚ I might just have to track this pattern down now! And I love how happy you look in it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Beautiful, that pattern lives in my stash, but I havenโ€™t tried it. Yours is perfection! Just might have to give it a try!

  3. You are such an inspiration to me! I love your style and choice of fabrics, thank you for sharing your beautiful creations and encouragement. I will try and find that pattern thanks for the heads up regarding it being out of print. Blessings, JL

  4. Great dress, Lucy! I have figured out that sewing bloggers are well-organized and disciplined people: writing about your projects regularly, fitting a sewing project in during the pre-holiday rush, taking photos during the big meal prep (while looking calm and collected)! All things I aspire to :-}

  5. Again, you wear it well. Your review was enough to make me look online for the pattern – and I found one on eBay! Now it’s mine. May I ask – you mention lengthening the skirt and bodice – do you mind letting me know your height? Wondering whether I’ll have to lengthen it too….Also, how much fabric did you have in the remnant? I love to shop for remnants too and see what can be done with them.

    • Thank you. Glad you were able to find the pattern. I’m 5’7″ and normally add 1″ to the bodice of Butterick, Vogue and McCall’s patterns. As the for the length of my remnant, unfortunately I don’t know how much I had. I just checked my “inventory sheet” and I didn’t make a note of that fabric. I’m sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

      • Thanks for the quick response. I’m 5’7″ too so thank you for the tip on the lenthening the bodice! Pleased also that you note you didn’t need the zip – the easier the project, the more likely it is to happen around here.
