This flocked denim has been in my stash for a few years. I purchased it from Mood Fabrics without knowing what I was going to make with it. I just knew I had to have it and inspiration would follow, as is often the case.
Living on the Central Coast of California I need coats, but I don’t need many warm coats. I decided this was the year I was going to use this fabric. I pictured something similar to a long denim jacket. I chose the Jalie City Coat pattern. I’ve had the pattern for a few years but had never made it until now. My fabric doesn’t show the details very well so below is a line drawing from the pattern. I plan on making this coat again in a solid red twill from my fabric stash. The pattern does not call for a lining which is what I was looking for with this fabric.
This coat was a joy to sew. I didn’t make any changes to the pattern. I sewed my usual size “S” that I always sew from Jalie patterns. I think this pattern would make a great raincoat when sewn with waterproof fabric.
I purchased the metal buttons at Britex in San Francisco. It’s my favorite place to get buttons. The selection is wonderful.
I love having an assortment of jackets, toppers and coats in my closet. This coat is a great addition to my “collection”.

Great looking coat and the fabric is perfect!
Thank you Linda.
LOVE this coat Lucy! I’d love to peek inside of it sometime, did you just serge the raw edges?
Thank you Kathy. It was fun to sew. Yes, I serged the raw edges prior to sewing the coat. I was going to use bias tape on the seams (Hong Kong Finish) but I feared that would make the seems to thick. I’ll gladly show you the coat.
Beautiful coat! Fantastic combination of pattern and fabric. I was wondering if your fabric had any stretch to it?
Thank you Becky. Yes, the fabric has some stretch to it. I’ve read that others have had success with fabric that didn’t have any stretch but I’m sure it depends on the type of fabric.
Beautifully done as always!!
Your coat turned out great! Love the buttons too. I made a coat using that pattern a few years ago. It is a winner, as are all the Jalie patterns I have tried.
Fabulous coat, Lucy!
Did you use any underlining, or just fabric + lining?
Thank you Joan. This pattern is unlined. It truly is like a long denim jacket. I would be early to create a lining for this pattern.
I am going to look up that pattern, it is just the look I am going for next winter. It looks great.
Thank you Rosemary. The coat is unlined but it would be simple to create a lining for it.
when you order fabric without a pattern in mind, what amount do
you usually buy?
I don’t have a rule around that. It all depends on the type of fabric as well as the price of the fabric.
Being in the Puget Sound area, I’m with you on not needing warm coats. You have inspired me with this fabulous “cool weather” coat! I’ll have to check out this pattern. Thank you!
Thank you Angie.
Another beautiful make!
Thank you Ellen.
This is gorgeous. I need this pattern. Wondering if you added a lining?
Thank you Cheryl. The pattern is unlined and I sewed it as is.
A stunning combination of fabric and pattern!
Thank you Linda.
Can you tell me if the coat is lined please? It looks stunning, you’ve done a great job.
Thank you Jan. The coat is unlined.
This is such a cool looking coat, Lucy! I’m not familiar with the Jalie patterns but will check them out as I love this design a lot.
Thank you Diane. I love Jalie patterns. They are my go-to when I need a quick project or a pick-me-up after a sewing failure.
I love this… It is just simply gorgeous… And that fabric 💕 💕
Thank you Mary Anne.
Thanks so much for posting this – it’s lovely. I didn’t know about this pattern. Both pattern and fabric would be very suitable for our Western Australian climate.
Thank you Loraine.
Gorgeous coat!
Thank you Michele.
